“The Face of Broken” is the newest collection by mixed-media artist Azzy Art, continuing an exploration of brokenness that began with the artist’s previous solo exhibition, “The Shape of Broken”.
This time, the focus turns to the human face. Each work is built around a portrait, and each portrait carries its own story, some personal, some cultural, and some inspired by the artist’s observations and interpretation of the world around her. Themes of identity, belonging, homesickness, memory, culture, and the complicated idea of home appear throughout the collection, but they are all connected by a larger idea: brokenness is part of being human.
A self-taught mixed-media artist with more than a decade of practice, Azzy approaches the canvas without limiting herself to one material or technique. Paint, texture, broken china, mirrors, found materials, and unexpected objects become part of the visual language of each piece.
Throughout the collection, cracks appear again and again, sometimes painted, sometimes formed with actual broken objects, and often traced in gold. They are deliberately left visible.
For Azzy, brokenness is not something that needs to be erased, disguised, or returned to its original state. It is something to acknowledge, accept, and incorporate into what comes next. The broken pieces become part of the work rather than something separate from it.
“The Face of Broken” reflects the idea that brokenness exists everywhere, in people, relationships, memories, places, cultures, and the world around us. Moving forward does not always mean repairing ourselves until there is no evidence of what happened. Sometimes it means allowing those fractures to become part of who we are.
Because being broken does not make us less whole.
Sometimes, the cracks are exactly where our stories become visible.
