Ink Spots of Richmond Hill: Ink Making from locally-foraged Botanicals – Presentation Evening

This presentation will focus on how to make ink from foraged plant and tree material found in Richmond Hill. Admission is free, and is restricted to the first thirty registrants, due to the limited seating.

Greg Chiykowski (https://artbygreg.weebly.com/) is a local artist who is a keen outdoor enthusiast with an interest in plants and trees. Over the past year and a half, he has discovered the thrill of making his own inks from locally foraged botanical materials such as black walnut, acorn caps, wild grapes, grape vine twigs, goldenrod, sumac, buckthorn, and coreopsis. In addition, he has also made inks out of other interesting materials including coffee, cabbage, avocado pits, drywall, carbon. copper pipe, indigo, and weld.
Greg’s presentation on October 8, will focus on making botanical inks from materials found right in Richmond Hill, much of it found in the Mill Pond area. Greg will also discuss how to find suitable plant material, the best times of year to harvest the materials, the ink-making process, and will have samples on hand to highlight the rich vibrant and sometime surprising colour of homemade inks.
The presentation evening will be followed by a workshop where students will learn how to forage for plants (in season) and learn the process to make their own ink.
Ink Spots – Ink Making Workshop
Date: Sunday, October 20, 2024 – 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm
Cost: $50 – Payment can be made by e-transfer or cash.
Location: Mill Pond Gallery, 314 Mill Street, Richmond Hill
Greg will instruct a half-day botanical ink making workshop. The cost of the workshop is $50 per person and all participants will leave the workshop with two small, bottled samples of ink made during the workshop.
Space is limited to twelve participants. Additional workshops may be considered.
